He’s definitely trying to make it a thing instead of calling it what it is—chateau des emoluments.
Miami Herald March 6, 2017
The antebellum 1% had their own version of trickle-down economics.
The Confederacy was a con job on whites. And still is.
What the flag symbolizes for blacks is enough reason to take it down. But there’s another reason that white southerners shouldn’t fly it. Or sport it on our state-issued license plates as some do here in North Carolina. The Confederacy - and the slavery that spawned it - was also one big con job on the Southern, white, working class. A con job funded by some of the ante-bellum one-per-centers, that continues today in a similar form.
You don’t have to be an economist to see that forcing blacks - a third of the South’s laborers - to work without pay drove down wages for everyone else. And not just in agriculture. A quarter of enslaved blacks worked in the construction, manufacturing and lumbering trades; cutting wages even for skilled white workers.
Thanks to the profitability of this no-wage/low-wage combination, a majority of American one-per-centers were southerners. Slavery made southern states the richest in the country.

Trump tweets out the staged situation room when al Baghdadi was killed all while Iraq is burning and our embassy is under attack/threat from a mob of Iraqis.
That’s all on him. All of it. He can’t help but deflect and project. Trump was too busy golfing and needed to be pried from the course because the situation in Baghdad was worsening by the hour.
Where are our rapid response forces? After Benghazi, Obama created a rapid response force to deal with threats to our embassies and consulates worldwide - precisely because we didn’t have the capability when Benghazi occurred.
Now? GOP silence and ignoring the crisis Trump created with his reactionary know nothing actions across the Middle East.
Syria, Russia, and Iran are all taking advantage of Trump. Saudis too. All of them. They all know Trump’s a weak reactionary know nothing whose bruised ego is what drives him to act/respond. They are playing Trump and we are weaker for it.

Why is it odd? Compared to her brothers, Ivanka is better-looking, has a more-stable family life, a better record in “business” (if a horridly schlocky one); and a record of public statements that (bad as it may be) at least doesn’t make her look like a total asshole/idiot/hack/entitled twat, etc.

Because Trump and whatever minions are in charge are going for max visibility when they should be doing the opposite. What are the Apaches supposed to do? Fire their chain guns into whatever is left of the mob? We couldn’t let the Iranian proxies get away with attacking our troops but a response did not require so public a demonstration as the airstrike, an action that would be sure to incite the Iraqis and undermine the Iraqi government. The Trumpsters are playing to his base with this whole affair. That they are also playing to the Iranian base does not bother them in the least.

Ivanka claims to be a voice of conscience for the administration. Where has that conscientiousness been listened to? Imo Ivanka is more cynical than her brothers. As a desperation move, maybe. I realize Mike Pence has the personal magnetism of your average Indiana fencepost, but I can’t see where Nikki Haley is going to attract any significant number of voters to Trump’s ticket who wouldn’t vote for him anyway.
I mean, I can see some idiot in the GOP campaign organization brainstorming up the notion that “Wow! A female POC* on the Republican ticket! Except the attack in Benghazi wasn’t on an embassy as that was in Tripoli, but instead was an attack on a consulate which struggled to provide necessary security in the face of funding cuts. And the “fast” response to the attack on our embassy in Iraq was because of changes implemented by the Obama admin.
And seriously, the gate got bashed down, fires were lit, but we’re supposed to be thrilled? This is like celebrating that “only” two people were killed in a Texas church because there were armed security on the premises.

Trump doesn’t like Pence. Switching him out will not lose him a single vote among his supporters, and who knows whether it might gain him a few votes. Remember that Trump did not need to win Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin to become President — he only needed to win one of those three states to be elected.

He’s a religious fanatic who truly believes God wants him to take over after Trump, he’s not giving that up without a fight.
remember that Collins nonsense this morning? Total bullshit.
here’s how it’s getting played:
Collins’ stance on the parameters of the impeachment trial aligns her with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who has all but promised a swift acquittal of Trump. McConnell has argued for following the framework of the 1999 impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, which punted a decision on witness testimony until after the initial arguments and senatorial questioning.
What she said:
“I am open to witnesses. I think it’s premature to decide who should be called until we see the evidence that is presented and get the answers to the questions that we senators can submit through the chief justice to both sides,” Collins told Maine Public Radio on Monday.
the effect: get the trial started, then the house / prosecutor / dems are out of moves and it gets shut down quick

Theoretically that is possible: primary voters tend to be more fanatic and extreme than those for the election. So candidate appeals to the base, but then in the general election, voters might not show up or might prefer the opposition. Nixon was always going to win in 1972, but his victory would not have been so lopsided if other, stronger candidates, were not driven out.

Lock the doors, the Mari Lwyd is coming and it wants its cake and ale….#NewYearsEve #NewYear #Wales pic.twitter.com/1djLTKBtxl— Mark Rees (@reviewwales) December 31, 2019
Mari Lwyd
In Wales, midwinter is the right time to look a gift horse in its gaping skull-mouth.
Around Christmas and New Year’s Eve, Welsh families might find themselves challenged by a decorated horse (or similar animal) skull waiting for them on their doorstep. Adorned in colorful ribbons and bells, the equine image of death has an especially ghostly appearance thanks to the white sheet draped over the person carrying it. As revelers sing and parade this head-on-a-stick around the neighborhood, doors open to meet the morbid white horse in battle, specifically, a battle of wits through poetry. This is Mari Lwyd, a midwinter, pagan tradition whereby celebrants earn food and drink only after dominating a poetry slam fronted by a skeletal face.
The practice also incorporates the centuries-old tradition of wassailing. From Middle English wæs hæil (“be in health”), wassail was originally a sugared-and-spiced drink of mulled ale, curdled cream, roasted apples, and eggs. Those who partook in sharing a huge bowl of this boozy mixture were “wassailing.” The term evolved to describe the custom of begging for booze around Christmas, a time when poor merrymakers expected generosities that would usually be denied. They’d arrive at the doorsteps of wealthier neighbors and ask to drink from the wassailing bowl or have their own bowl filled.Modern Welsh wassailing isn’t class-based, but the end goal remains the same. Wassailers earn an invitation to come in by proving themselves through a back-and-forth rhyming battle with the residents. Once inside, it’s traditional cakes and ale all around. Wæs hæil!
I’m not making it to midnight. My son has a Japanese exchange student friend with whom they will eat “toshi-koshi soba” (“longevity soba”) downstairs while I sleep. Or I might do an “anymouse” and say I’m going to bed but in fact stay up for hours. I don’t know. I’m so tired. So much shoveling; so much reading; so much walking a young dog born, it seems, to pull through snow.
And should add, we cracked the bottle of Cakebread Cellars 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon* when I started cooking at 5:30, but I’ve only had two glasses.
*I posted earlier that one of my wife’s client’s husband gifted her with two bottles of Cakebread Cellars wine and a $125 gift card to a local restaurant.

In personality and temperament, Bush 43 is in many ways the opposite of Trump: married once to a librarian, a devoted father of two, a man who was not racist or misogynist or prejudiced against others, who had people of color holding important positions in his administration, raised with the ideal of public service. Yet, is it clear which administration (to date) was more damaging to the Middle East or the world: his government lied us into a war, mishandled the aftermath of conflict, demonized those who objected to the war, was incompetent at dealing with Katrina, won 2004 by painting gays as the other, ran a vicious campaign against McCain in 2000, outed a spy. So much (other than personal corruption) presaged the Trump debacle that is destroying us.

My New Year’s resolution is that Donald Trump should just shut the fuck up. It’s like a normal NY resolution in that it won’t happen.

It is! And we don’t really consider it a charitable contribution as we don’t have cable and it’s most of what we watch on TV. We don’t mind paying for quality entertainment.

And a Happy New Year to everyone, as well. We’ll celebrate early and head for bed at the usual time. Tomorrow we’ll take a little hike at Año Nuevo (New Year) Beach with friends.
It is my sincere hope that the New Year brings good things for everyone except Trump and his enablers. May Trump find himself removed from office and on trial for various financial irregularities.
